The triple-click trick

The rest of this guide is the manual path, for anyone who would rather build it by hand: it is fiddly in the ways the “Where this breaks” section below names, since the gesture fires whatever filter Settings happens to have selected, has no memory and no schedule, and does nothing at all until you remember to perform it.
There’s a gesture buried in iOS that most people never assign, and it’s the closest thing your phone has to a manual brake. Triple-click the side button and the screen drains to gray. Triple-click again and the color comes back. Two minutes of setup, all of it in Settings.
What makes it worth an article isn’t the gray, though. It’s the second. Doomscrolling isn’t really a decision: it’s the absence of one, and what keeps it running is that nothing in the loop ever asks you anything. A triple-click inserts one deliberate second into that loop. You have to decide to do it, and having decided anything at all, you’re no longer in the trance. The gray is what you get. The interruption is what actually ends the session.
This guide sets it up properly, shows the four situations where it genuinely earns its place, and names the one thing it fundamentally can’t do.
The setup (two minutes)
Two steps. The first one is the one people skip, and skipping it is why the gesture sometimes appears to do nothing.
Step 1: Prime the filter
- Open Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Color Filters.
- Toggle Color Filters on and select Grayscale. Your whole screen goes gray. That’s expected.
- Toggle Color Filters back off. Color returns.
That on-off dance is not busywork. It tells iOS which filter to use whenever something enables filters later. Your triple-click flips the switch; this step decides what the switch does. If you skip it, you may well end up with a gesture that toggles some color tint you selected once in 2023 and forgot about.
Step 2: Assign the gesture
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Accessibility Shortcut (it’s at the bottom of the Accessibility page) and check Color Filters. That’s it. Triple-clicking the side button (the Home button on older iPhones) now toggles grayscale on or off, anywhere, anytime: inside apps, on the lock screen, mid-scroll.
One thing to watch: if you’ve assigned more than one accessibility feature to the shortcut, the triple-click offers a menu instead. A menu is fine for occasional use, but it costs you the thing you came for. The whole value here is that the gesture is faster than deliberation. Make it a two-step interaction and your thumb stops doing it. If you want the reflex, keep Color Filters as the only assigned feature.
Prefer not to use the side button? Add the Color Filters control to Control Center instead (Settings → Control Center, or long-press Control Center to add controls, depending on your iOS version). Slightly slower, harder to trigger by accident.
Four things it’s genuinely good for
1. Killing a scroll you’re already in. This is the flagship use and it takes about a second. You notice (dimly, the way you always notice, twenty minutes late) that you’ve been on the feed a while. Triple-click. The stories ring goes gray, the thumbnails go gray, the notification badges go gray, and the app you were pinned to for twenty minutes becomes an unusually dull list of text. You put the phone down sooner. Not out of willpower; out of boredom, which is a considerably more reliable resource, and close to the researchers’ own reading of why grayscale works, which is that it makes smartphones less gratifying3.
2. Pre-committing an evening you already know is trouble. Some evenings you can see it coming. You’re tired, it’s late, and you know exactly how the next two hours go. Triple-click before you start, not during. Your phone is now gray for everything (mail, messages, the feed), and it stays that way until you deliberately undo it. Undoing it is also one second, which some people find too easy. Others find that the honesty is the point: you can have the color back whenever you want, you just have to want it on purpose.
3. Rescuing yourself when the screen is stuck gray. If you run any kind of grayscale automation, sooner or later one won’t fire and you’ll open the camera to a gray viewfinder, or try to check whether a photo of a rash is a rash. This is the fix. Triple-click, take the photo, triple-click back. It’s the reason our per-app guide tells you to set up the gesture before you build any automations. The escape hatch goes in first.
4. It works when everything else is broken. This is the underrated part. The gesture lives in the OS, one layer below anything installed on the phone, including anything we make. An automation can silently fail to fire. An app has to be found, launched, and in a working state before it can help you, and “find and launch an app” is a sequence of steps you’re conspicuously bad at in exactly the moment you need it. A gesture just fires. For a tool whose entire job is to work at the moment your judgment is worst, that’s not a small property.
Does the gray actually do anything?
Briefly, because this article is about the gesture rather than the literature, and we have a full write-up of the evidence in the science of grayscale.
Across published field studies, switching a phone to grayscale reduces objectively measured screen time by roughly 20 to 40 minutes a day1 2 3. Logged screen time, from the device, not self-reported.
Two findings bear directly on the triple-click specifically. Zimmermann and Sobolev (2023, Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking) ran a pre-registered field experiment with 112 participants comparing three approaches: grayscale, framed as “design friction”; self-set time limits; and self-monitoring alone. Grayscale produced an immediate, significant drop in measured screen time against the self-monitoring control1. Self-set limits produced a smaller, more gradual one. The gray does something that merely knowing does not.
Dekker and Baumgartner (2024, Mobile Media & Communication) found about 20 minutes a day less screen time during a grayscale week, and (this is the useful bit) the number of daily unlocks didn’t change2. Grayscale doesn’t stop you reaching for the phone. It makes you put it down sooner once you’re there.
Which is precisely the shape of the triple-click. It’s not a tool for stopping you picking up your phone; nothing you can do in one second is. It’s a tool for shortening the session you’re already in.
A note on the intensity slider
The Color Filters screen has an intensity slider, and it applies to whatever your triple-click toggles. On iOS 26.6 its travel is unlabeled, a bare track with no percentage markings, so “set it to 70%” is an instruction you can only follow by eye. If you dial it back and later want to reproduce that setting, you’re reproducing a thumb position, not a number.
Every published study used full grayscale1 2 3 (the breakdown is in the science of grayscale), so what a partial intensity does to the effect is uncharted. If you experiment, experiment knowing you’re off the map.
Where this breaks
Two limits, one minor and one that matters.
It controls the switch, not what the switch does. If the filter selection in Settings gets changed from Grayscale to a color tint (by you, months later, or by someone borrowing your phone), the triple-click now toggles that instead, cheerfully and without comment. The gesture has no opinion about which filter it’s firing. If a triple-click ever produces something strange, the Color Filters screen is the first place to look. Re-running Step 1 fixes it.
It has no memory and no schedule. This is the real limitation, and it’s structural rather than fixable. The gesture does nothing until you perform it. It doesn’t know what time it is, which app you’re in, or how long you’ve been in it. It will not fire at 11pm. It will not notice that you’ve been on the same feed for forty minutes.
So you have to remember to use it, and remembering is exactly the faculty a trance takes offline. That’s not a small caveat; it’s the whole gap. The triple-click is excellent at converting an intention into an action in about a second. It is completely useless at producing the intention. On the evenings you most need it, the gesture sits there fully configured and untriggered, because the version of you holding the phone isn’t currently in the market for interruptions.
Everything else in this category is, in one way or another, an attempt to close that gap.
What closes the gap
