The mechanism is dull on purpose. Color (the saturated reds of a notification badge, the bright thumbnails of a video feed) is part of what pulls you back. Drain it and a scroll session tends to end sooner2 5. It works by shrinking sessions, not by stopping you reaching for the phone: you still open the app; you just put it down earlier.

What has been measured so far

Full-strength grayscale is the only intensity these studies actually measured: “grayscale at 70%” is an open question, not a finding. Long-term adherence is untested too, and people habituate to a static change.
