one sec review: friction works, and where it stops

Most reviews of a screen-time app land in one of two registers: the affiliate rave or the one-star grudge. one sec deserves neither, because the interesting thing about it is that it works, and the best evidence that it works also marks exactly where it stops. That evidence is one sec’s own: a study run on the app itself, by researchers who then took it apart to see which piece was doing the lifting4. The answer wasn’t the piece you’d guess.

So this is a fair review with a thesis. one sec is well-built, the friction is gentle, and for some goals it’s the right tool. It also has a ceiling, and the ceiling is structural, not a bug a future update fixes. Understanding why is the fastest way to know whether one sec is your app, or whether you’re looking for a different axis entirely.

What one sec actually does

one sec inserts a beat between you and the app you reach for. Tap Instagram, and instead of the feed you get a short breathing pause (a deep breath, a moment, and then a choice: keep going, or never mind). Mechanically it’s built on Shortcuts automations that fire when a targeted app opens, which is why setup involves wiring one automation per app by hand. The pause is the product. It doesn’t block anything, it doesn’t shield, it doesn’t take the app away. It just makes you arrive on purpose instead of on reflex.

At the time of writing it’s iOS-only, free to start, with a paid tier sold as a subscription (family plans and a one-time lifetime unlock exist alongside it). Pricing drifts, so the mechanism is the stable part, and the mechanism is genuinely good. Of everything in this category, one sec’s friction is among the most humane: brief, calm, and designed to hand you the choice rather than fight you for it.

The best evidence for one sec, and the twist inside it

Here’s the part most reviews miss. one sec is the subject of the strongest field study in this whole space: Grüning, Riedel and Lorenz-Spreen’s 2023 PNAS experiment (280 participants, six weeks, real phones)4. The result was unambiguous. Attempts to open the targeted apps fell 37% over the six weeks. For an intervention this light, that’s a large, real effect. one sec works.

Now the twist that ought to reframe how you read the whole app. The researchers decomposed the intervention to find the active ingredient, and it was not the barrier. The single strongest feature was the escape hatch: the explicit “never mind” option offered at the moment of interception. The brief enforced delay reduced consumption too. The earnest deliberation message, the prompt asking whether you really want to do this, was not effective, a result they established in a separate preregistered online experiment with 500 participants4. And across the trial, users voluntarily dismissed 36% of their own open attempts when handed a graceful way out.

Read that carefully, because it’s easy to misuse: this is not evidence that friction fails. It’s evidence of friction succeeding, with the working part located precisely. The mechanism isn’t obstruction. It’s an offered exit at the one moment an automatic behavior has been interrupted and you’re briefly available to choose otherwise. one sec’s best design decision is that its wall has a door in it, and the study says the door is doing most of the work. (A separate longitudinal analysis of one sec’s own usage, presented at CHI 2024, follows 1,039 users over an average of 13.4 weeks12. We cite it here for scale, not for any effect size.)

The ceiling: friction is a budget, and it habituates

If the escape hatch is what works, then one sec’s ceiling follows directly: it’s still friction, and friction is a resource you spend.

Every interruption draws down a tolerance budget. In a 2024 study of design frictions on social media (Ruiz, Molina León and Heuer, Mensch und Computer), 30 participants had to react to each post before the next one arrived, instead of scrolling on8. It worked on the target behavior (they recalled significantly more of what they had seen), and it grated: 53% felt frustrated by it, and only 20% said they would like more apps to have the feature. That’s the tradeoff in two numbers. A friction that works and still frustrates a majority of the people it works on is, over any horizon longer than a couple of weeks, a friction that quietly gets switched off.

The second limit is habituation. A 2026 seven-day within-subject field study on short-form video (Meinhardt et al., N = 104; in press, cited from its preprint) found that the pop-up intervention was initially effective but quickly lost impact7. The condition that sustained its subjective ratings the longest wasn’t a fixed prompt at all; it was a gradually intensifying visual intervention, something that ramps rather than announces. Anything that presents itself as a discrete event, including a breathing pause, is something you eventually learn to tap through without noticing.

None of this makes one sec bad. It makes one sec finite. It’s the gentlest, best-evidenced version of a mechanism that, by its nature, you slowly adapt to. The ceiling isn’t low (the PNAS numbers are real), but there is a ceiling, and it’s made of the same material as the intervention.

When one sec is the right pick

Plenty of the time, it is. If your goal is to reintroduce deliberation, to stop opening apps on reflex and start opening them on purpose, a pause with a graceful exit is exactly the shape of that goal, and one sec is the best-built version of it. If you like the idea of a nudge that never locks you out, that preserves the choice rather than removing it, this is your app. The friction is gentle enough to live with, and the evidence that it moves the needle comes from a published field experiment run on the app itself4.

If instead you want a hard wall for a bounded stretch (a deadline week, a total-abstinence run), one sec is the wrong mechanism and you want a blocker: Opal, which uses Apple’s Screen Time machinery for schedules and hard blocks (a free tier with a paid subscription; iOS and Android), or ScreenZen, which stacks escalating delays and cooldowns and is free, donation-supported, on iOS, Android, and desktop. If you’d rather bind your future self with something physical, Brick sells a small NFC puck you tap to lock and unlock app groups, a one-time hardware purchase with no subscription. Different goals, different tools; each is honest about being obstruction.

What every one of these has in common, one sec’s pause included, is that they work at the layer of access. They stand between you and the app. Which raises a question none of them puts on the chart.

A different axis: remove the payout, not the pause

The whole one-sec-versus-blockers-versus-pucks argument is a debate about how to stand in the doorway. There’s a mechanism that skips the doorway. Instead of adding friction before the feed, you leave the feed fully open and make it less rewarding to look at: you drain the color out of it. Nothing is blocked. There’s no pause to tap through, no “never mind” to dismiss, nothing to habituate to, because there’s no event. The screen just quietly stops paying out.

The evidence here is unusually clean for a wellbeing intervention: across published field studies, running a phone in grayscale reduces objectively measured screen time by roughly 20 to 40 minutes a day1 2 3. Holte and Ferraro’s 2020 “True colors” study in The Social Science Journal cut college students’ screen time by 37.90 minutes a day, and the authors’ own reading is the mechanism in one line: grayscale makes smartphones less gratifying3. Nobody interrupted anyone. The phone simply stopped paying as well.

That’s the axis nobody puts next to one sec, and it’s the one Dwindle is built on. Where friction spends a tolerance budget, de-stimulation has no budget to spend, because it never asks you for anything. There’s no wall, so no door; no prompt, so nothing to grow numb to. And because a whole-phone grayscale switch is a blunt instrument (it grays your camera and your photos too, which is why people abandon it), the version most people actually want is per-app: a colorful phone with a gray Instagram. No major app ships per-app grayscale natively (the whole-phone toggle lives in iOS’s own accessibility settings as a manual workaround), which is the specific gap Dwindle fills.

The honest summary

one sec is a good app, and its own best study tells you why: the escape hatch does the work, the pause helps, the deliberation message isn’t effective4. If your goal is more deliberate opening and you want the gentlest, best-evidenced nudge in the category, it’s the one to get. Its ceiling is simply that it’s friction: it spends a tolerance budget (53% frustrated; only 20% wanting more apps to work that way8) and it habituates (a pop-up that starts out effective quickly loses impact7), so the effect is real but finite. If you want a different mechanism entirely (one that removes the payout instead of adding a pause, with nothing to override and nothing to get used to), that’s the grayscale approach, and Dwindle applies it per app, automatically.
